The incident occurred Thursday morning on Thika Road after an exchange of fire between police and the gangsters, who were in a private car.
Two automatic pistols with five rounds of ammunition were recovered.
Nairobi police boss Anthony Kibuchi said that they were hunting for the group that he described as dangerous.
He said the thugs have been involved in several robberies in the city and its environs.
The thugs were driving in a Toyota Probox and were confronted by the officers from the Special Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU). A fierce shootout ensued and all of them were shot dead.
Police say that they had planned to raid Mambo Supermarket in Pangani. The incident caused a major traffic snarl up on the busy road.
Meanwhile, a man was shot dead and three others arrested on Moi Avenue Wednesday night after they were found robbing another person.
