Africa vows to fight gas emissions

The Africa Group at the ongoing climate change meeting in Durban on Wednesday proposed amendments to the Kyoto Protocol and voted to introduce new clauses that will put more pressure on industrialised nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change which sets binding targets for 37 industrialised countries and the European community to commit to reducing gases.
The Africa Group now wants an amendment to Annex B of the protocol that calls for greater commitments captured in Annex 1 to renew parties’ commitment to the provisions of the protocol for an additional period covering 2013 to 2017.
The group is also proposing that adaptation activities be funded at full cost through a direct and simplified process that is accountable and open to countries.
The spokesperson of the Africa Group, Mr Seyni Nafo, said they will have to engage more with the EU and Japan, who for now are opposed to commitment to the protocol.
The protocol is also designed to assist countries in adapting to the adverse effects of climate change through facilitating development and deployment of techniques that can help increase resilience to impacts of climate change.
