A 35-year-old man who chopped off his wife’s hands has been arrested in Isingiro in Uganda. Polly Namaye, the Police Spokesperson for South Western Region said the suspect, Julius Kabagambe, 35, of Kalungu, Rushasha in Bukanga District attacked the victim, Katarina Tuzarirwe, 27 at her home on Friday at around 2:00am and chopped off her hands.
Namaye said the couple had divorced a year ago. She said the police acted fast and arrested the suspect as he fled the village. “We detained the suspect and later rushed the victim to Mbarara Hospital where she is nursing serious wounds,” she said.
Woman’s story
Tuzarirwe told this reporter on her hospital bed at Mbarara Referral Hospital that she divorced her husband in March last year after he married another man’s wife. “We were living in a happy relationship but after sometime, the man changed his mind and married another woman,” she said.
She said he then chased her from their home and sold the land. She said that while she was at her parent’s home, she got rumours that her hubby was planning to attack her over allegations that she had turned into a prostitute.
“When he received those rumours, he called me and threatened to kill me,” she said. She said that on Friday morning, he called her saying he wanted to spend a night at their home to settle their differences in the presence of her parents.
“When he came, we welcomed him to our home and my parents suggested that he spends a night,” she said. This , as it turned out, was giving the devil abode. While they were asleep, the man woke up and picked a quarrel with her. Amidst a struggle, she said, he picked a machete from under the bed and hacked of her hands like a bunch of bananas. “He then disappeared to the home of a neighbour where he was arrested the following day,” she said tearfully.
