Kijana wa Miaka 24 ambaka Bibi yake wa miaka 83 huku Mume wa Bibi huyo akishuhudia

Police have launched a manhunt for a 24-year-old man from Toporo village in Beitbridge after he allegedly attacked an elderly couple with a machete in a botched robbery attempt. The man allegedly raped the woman while the husband watched. The crime occurred two weeks ago but was only reported on Friday night after the 83-year-old died.

The woman's body was taken to a local private mortuary pending post-mortem at the United Bulawayo Hospitals. Matabeleland South police spokesperson Sergeant Loveness Mangena identified the deceased as Litshani Muleya (83).

She said the suspect Trymore Mguni went to the couple's homestead at around 7pm armed with a machete.

He found the couple sitting by the fireplace in their kitchen hut and demanded cash. The couple indicated that they had nothing and Mguni pulled out the machete and struck the husband twice on the head.

The 84-year-old lost consciousness.

Mguni, according to the police, turned on to the woman and struck her once on the head.

"Mguni then raped the now deceased while she lay unconscious before fleeing the scene under the cover of darkness.  The issue came to light when the couple's daughter visited their homestead. She discovered that the two had wounds on their heads and rushed them to Beitbridge District Hospital," said Sgt Mangena.

She said Muleya's condition deteriorated after she was discharged from the hospital resulting in her death on Friday evening and the matter was in turn reported to the police.

Sgt Mangena said the suspect was still at large, adding that anyone with information that could lead to Mguni's arrest should contact their nearest police station.
