Ciao from Milano! We've tackled the fall 2016 shows in both New York and London,
and now we're making the rounds in Milan, where some of the buzziest
(Alessandro Michele) and most legendary (Miuccia Prada) designers will
present their latest collections. Read on for the looks we loved from the runways on the third day, and click here for even more reviews from the season.
Diesel Black Gold
Most women probably own a classic, black
leather motorcycle jacket at this point, but do you know anyone who has
one covered in shimmering sequins? We didn't think so.
Giamba
Giambattista Valli always mixes elements of youthful sweetness with naughty rebelliousness in his collections for Giamba,
and for fall, he looked to downtown '80s girls for inspiration. This
graffiti-covered biker jacket paired with a fluffy, almost angelic white
minidress incorporated the best of both worlds. To add an extra touch
of punk, the designer sent many looks out with platorm creepers — a
style that's quickly becoming ubiquitous.
I loved watching this fluffy white gown float
down the runway, and details like a pearl-studded waist belt and tiers
of lace would make it ideal for a "bad girl" bride (or at least one who
idolized '80s-era Madonna). To avoid looking too wholesome, the dress was topped with a patent leather, short-sleeved jacket.
Etro
It was a super-literal '90s moment on the runway at Etro, from the Everything but the Girl soundtrack ("Missing"
is still one of my all-time favorite jams) to pieces that could have
easily been pulled from the "My So-Called Life" wardrobe closet: roomy
knit beanies, long floral dresses, lace-up black boots, plaids galore
and lacy black slips that peeked out here and there. This look — a
tattered striped sweater pulled over a more dressy silk maxi — channeled
the grungy theme without looking dated.
There was a variety of richly embroidered
outerwear in the collection, but this oversized army coat with a shaggy
shearling collar was particularly eye-catching. I wouldn't be surprised
if a top street style star calls it in to wear before Fashion Month is
over.
Marco de Vincenzo
Colorful furs are taking over the Milan runways, and considering designer Marco de Vincenzo
isn't one to shy away from electric, clashing hues, the intarsia coats
he showed for fall were a delight. And don't worry, animal lovers — the
fur is all faux.
Versace
The Versace collection
had something for every woman, from sharply tailored outerwear to
slinky, sequined party dresses to casual, sporty knitwear. But the fancy
coats are at the top of my wishlist, including this intarsia fur with
hints of baby blue and pink, cinched at the waist with a silver chain.
This version in a patent gray leather is a bit more laid-back, but lined in pink fur, it's still glamorous as hell.
