CLINTON, Wash. - Investigators say alcohol was a factor in a fiery crash that killed three young men just after midnight Saturday on south Whidbey Island.
The driver of the car, an 18-year-old Langley woman, escaped the flames, but she was arrested and booked into the Island County jail after receiving treatment for her injuries.
State troopers responded to the scene, at Wilkinson Road and Meander Road, where they found a car engulfed in flames a few minutes after midnight Saturday.
A preliminary investigation found that the car, a four-door passenger vehicle, veered off the roadway after passing another vehicle and slammed into a tree. The car then burst into flames while the driver and three passengers were still inside.
The driver, later identified as Kaylea Souza, 18, was pulled from the car by witnesses.
