Makerere varsity to honour Kenya President Kabaki

Makerere University Council has passed a resolution to honour Kenya’s President Mwai Kibaki with an honorary Doctor of Laws for his promotion of regional social welfare and freedom.
The council, the highest decision making body, adopted the proposal to honour President Kibaki on Thursday at its 123 meeting in recognition of his contribution to public service at national, regional and international levels in areas of academic excellence, political, social and economic reforms.
“The Honorary Awards Committee and the University Senate observed that H.E President Mwai Kibaki has distinguished himself as a visionary statesman who has also spearheaded economic development, gender and educational reforms and political cohesion,” the university public relations officer, Ms Ritah Namisango, said on Friday.
According to the university statute, there are three categories of Honorary Degree; the Doctor of Science awarded for academic contribution in the field of science, the Doctor of Letters for academic contribution in the humanities and the Doctor of Laws for Public Service and eminent citizens.
Mr Kibaki, 80, graduated from Makerere in 1955 with a first class Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, History and Political Science before joining the London School of Economics for a Bachelor of Science in Public Finance.
