Arsenal and Chelsea played out a mundane scoreless draw in a key London derby as the race for the Champions League places continued to paint a far from clear picture.

Chelsea, who had made eight changes from the side that had so impressively beaten Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday, rarely troubled goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Robin van Persie was twice guilty of missing good chances, one in either half. Before the break the Dutchman steered Theo Walcott's excellent free-kick onto the post with his left foot when it appeared the most straightfoward option was to poke it with his other leg. 

Then, when Alex Song floated a trademark chip over the Chelsea rearguard, Van Persie blasted his effort directly at Petr Cech.

Earlier, defender Laurent Koscielny had flicked a header onto the crossbar.
